Barceloneta
The old fishermen's quarter on a triangle of land between the marina and the sea. Tight grid streets of laundry-strung balconies open straight onto the city beach, with seafood restaurants, beach bars and a permanent holiday mood. The place to stay if the sea is the point of your trip.

What it is like
Barceloneta is small and characterful: narrow streets of tall, slim houses built for fishing families, now a mix of locals and visitors. The wide promenade and the beach run along its seaward edge, with the W hotel at the far end and the marina and Port Vell on the other side. It is its own world, ten minutes on foot from the medieval old town but with a completely different, seaside personality.
What to do
The beach is the main event: swim, walk the promenade, or rent a bike along the seafront. Port Vell has the aquarium and the cable car up to Montjuic leaves from here. For everything else the old town is a short walk; see things to do. Keep valuables off the sand; beach theft is common.
Where to eat
This is the home of Barcelona seafood and rice, but the restaurants right on the beachfront are mostly overpriced tourist traps. Walk into the grid for the real thing: classic seafood spots, the famous bombas, and old vermouth bars. The eat & drink guide points you to the keepers.
