The Gothic Quarter

The Barri Gotic is the medieval heart of Barcelona: a maze of stone lanes, hidden squares and the cathedral, wedged between La Rambla and Via Laietana. It is the most atmospheric place to stay and walk, and the easiest to overpay in if you do not know which streets to skip.

Where it is
Old town, between La Rambla and Via Laietana, by the waterfront.

What it is like

The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of the city, built over the Roman settlement, and it looks it: a tangle of narrow streets that open suddenly onto squares like Placa Sant Felip Neri or Placa del Rei. It is touristy in its main arteries and quietly residential a street back. The trick is to keep moving away from the obvious. The closer you are to La Rambla, the more you pay and the less local it feels; the lanes toward Via Laietana and the cathedral reward wandering.

What to do

The cathedral and its cloister, the Roman walls, Placa del Rei and the MUHBA history museum are the anchors, plus simply getting lost. It pairs naturally with El Born next door for the Picasso Museum. For the full attraction list see our things to do guide, and keep your wits about you with our pickpocket guide, because this is a hotspot.

Where to eat

Ignore the photo-menu terraces around Placa Reial and the cathedral. The good eating is on the side streets: old bodegas, vermouth bars and a few excellent modern kitchens. Our eat & drink guide and our Gothic Quarter food tour guide name the keepers.

Hotels in the Gothic Quarter

Unbeatable for atmosphere and walkability. Ask for an interior or upper-floor room, because the lanes carry noise late. See the trade-offs in our where to stay guide.

Who it suits

Choose the Gothic Quarter if you want history and atmosphere on your doorstep and do not mind some noise and crowds. Skip it if you are a light sleeper or want wide, calm streets, in which case Eixample is the better base.
