Neighbourhood

Gracia

Once a separate town, Gracia still feels like one: a grid of low buildings, leafy plazas full of tables, independent shops and a crowd that is far more local than touristy. It sits just above Eixample, a short walk or one metro stop from the centre, near Park Guell.

What it is like

Gracia is where Barcelonans go when they want a neighbourhood rather than a postcard. Life happens in its squares: Placa del Sol, Placa de la Vila and Placa de la Virreina fill with tables, kids and conversation. The shops are independent, the bars are unpretentious, and the whole barri turns into a riot of decorated streets each August for the Festa Major de Gracia, one of the best free events in the city.

What to do

The big draw above Gracia is Park Guell (book timed entry; see our guide). Otherwise Gracia is for ambling: browsing its shops, square-hopping for vermouth, and catching whatever is on in its small theatres and music venues. For the wider city, the metro has you in the centre in minutes.

Where to eat

Gracia eats brilliantly and affordably: traditional bodegas, brunch spots, vegetarian kitchens and a famous vermouth culture. Our Gracia vermut guide covers the ritual, and the eat & drink guide has more.

Who it suits
