Sant Antoni
The barri locals point to when they say Barcelona has gentrified well. A genuinely residential corner on the edge of Eixample, anchored by its gorgeously restored market hall, with a food and cafe scene that punches far above its tourist profile, and prices to match real life.

What it is like
Sant Antoni was a sleepy residential pocket until the restoration of the Mercat de Sant Antoni, a vast iron market hall, turned it into one of the city's most liveable barris. Its streets mix old hardware shops and bakeries with third-wave coffee, natural-wine bars and excellent restaurants. On Sundays the market hosts a beloved second-hand book and collectors fair. It feels lived-in rather than staged, while still being a ten-minute walk from the old town.
What to do
The market itself is the anchor; beyond that, Sant Antoni is for eating, drinking coffee and people- watching, with the Raval's museums and Montjuic close by. It pairs naturally with neighbouring Poble Sec and its Carrer Blai pintxos run, covered in our pintxos guide.
Where to eat
This is one of the best-value eating barris in Barcelona: the market for produce, plus tapas, brunch, vermouth and modern kitchens at local prices. Start with the market and the streets around it; the eat & drink guide has the specifics.
