Rooftop bars and nightlife in Barcelona
Barcelona goes out late and goes out hard. The key to enjoying it is timing: a rooftop for sunset, dinner at ten, bars until the clubs actually fill around two. Here are the rooftops worth their markup, the clubs that matter, and how to pace a night so you are not stood in an empty room at midnight.
How a Barcelona night runs
- Sunset
- Rooftop or beach bar drinks from about 19:00 to 21:00.
- Dinner
- From 21:00; locals eat late, so 22:00 is normal.
- Bars
- Midnight to 02:00 in El Born, the Gothic Quarter and the Gaixample.
- Clubs
- They open around midnight but only fill from 02:00 to 03:00; they run to dawn.
- Getting home
- The metro runs all night on Saturdays; otherwise night buses and taxis.
Rooftop bars worth the markup
Rooftops are about the view and the moment, not the drinks list, and you pay for both. Go for sunset, have one or two, then move on to dinner; nobody stays up there all night. Our picks, mostly on hotels:
-
hotel1898.com 01Hotel 1898 rooftop
A handsome rooftop pool and bar perched over La Rambla; come at sunset for a drink with the old town spread out below.
-
grandhotelcentral.com 02Grand Hotel Central Skybar
The Skybar's little infinity pool and wraparound view over the medieval roofline make one of the best sunsets in the old town.
- 03
Barcelo Raval 360
A full-circle terrace above El Raval with some of the widest city-and-sea views in town; relaxed and rarely stuffy.
-
ohlaboutiquehotels.com 04Ohla Barcelona rooftop
A polished glass-walled rooftop with a plunge pool and cocktails facing the cathedral; book a lounger in summer.
- 05
La Dolce Vitae (Hotel Majestic)
The Majestic's classic terrace looks straight at the Sagrada Familia; old-school glamour and a properly made cocktail.
- 06
Eclipse (W Barcelona)
High above the beach in the sail-shaped W hotel, with sweeping sea-and-city views and a late, glossy crowd. Check ahead, as the bar has been under refurbishment.
-
hotelcasafuster.com 07Casa Fuster rooftop
A small Modernist-hotel rooftop at the top of Passeig de Gracia looking down the boulevard; quieter, characterful and good for a calm drink.
Cocktails run about EUR 12 to 18, often with a queue or minimum spend in summer. Pools and terraces are seasonal, so check opening times before you go.
Rooftop reality
Expect EUR 12 to 18 a cocktail and, in summer, a queue or a minimum spend. The view is the product. For a cheaper skyline, the Bunkers del Carmel at sunset is free, just bring your own drinks and carry your rubbish out.
Clubs and going late
The serious clubs cluster in Poblenou and on the beach. Razzmatazz is the giant: five rooms, five genres, the place most big international acts and club nights land. Sala Apolo (and its Nitsa nights) is the beloved mid-size venue in Poble Sec. On the seafront, Opium, Shoko and Pacha are the glossy beach clubs, touristy and pricey but fun in summer. For something small and central, Marula Cafe (funk and soul) and the tiny Macarena in the Gothic Quarter. For queer nightlife, the Gaixample is the heart of it; see our Gaixample guide.
Bar crawls, tickets and a bed nearby
A guided bar crawl is an easy way to find the scene on your first night. Big club nights and concerts often sell tickets ahead; check our events calendar. Staying out late? Base yourself near the action or you will pay for a 04:00 taxi; see where to stay.

How we checked this
Venues are long-standing fixtures of the Barcelona scene; opening nights, music policies and beach-club pricing shift by season, so check current programmes and dress codes before you go. We date this and re-check.

Common questions
What time does Barcelona nightlife start?
Late. Bars get going around midnight and clubs only fill from 02:00 to 03:00, running until dawn. Have a rooftop drink at sunset and dinner around ten to pace yourself.
What is the best area for nightlife in Barcelona?
El Born and the Gothic Quarter for bars, Poblenou (Razzmatazz) and Poble Sec (Apolo) for clubs, the beach for the big summer clubs, and the Gaixample for queer nightlife.
Are Barcelona rooftop bars worth it?
For the view and a sunset drink, yes, but they are pricey and can have minimum spends. Have one or two, then move on. The free Bunkers del Carmel viewpoint is the budget alternative.
How do I get home late in Barcelona?
The metro runs all night on Saturdays; on other nights use the Nitbus night buses or a taxi. Clubs near the centre and beach keep taxis flowing until dawn.
