Common questions
Is Barcelona flat enough to cycle?
The main tourist belt — Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta, El Born, lower Eixample — is essentially flat. Montjuïc (173 m) is the one significant climb; an e-bike makes it easy. Gràcia and the upper city have some inclines but nothing extreme on a standard bike.
Can tourists use Bicing?
Technically yes, but the visitor tier costs around EUR 60-75/day once registration and deposit are included — far more than renting from a shop at EUR 15/day. The e-bike fleet is restricted to registered residents. Use a rental shop instead.
Do I need a helmet by law?
Adults are not legally required to wear helmets in the city (children are). Most rental shops offer them free; we recommend wearing one regardless.
Are bike tours suitable for non-cyclists?
Yes. The standard guided bike tour covers flat terrain at a relaxed pace; guides wait at junctions and the group does not separate. The minimum age is typically 6-8 (child seat or kids' bike). No fitness test or prior experience required.
What happens if my bike is stolen?
Report to the Guardia Urbana (local police) and get a denuncia reference number — you'll need it for insurance. Rental shops carry basic liability; check your travel insurance for theft cover before you travel. Always use two locks: a U-lock through the frame and a cable through both wheels, fixed to a metal U-rack.
