How much does a Barcelona trip cost?

Per person, excluding flights, a comfortable Barcelona trip runs roughly EUR 100 to 130 a day. You can do it well on EUR 70 with hostels and market food, or spend EUR 250-plus on hotels and tasting menus. Here are honest numbers for three trip styles, what individual things cost, and the taxes and fees that catch people out.

The tourist tax (doubled in April 2026)

Barcelona charges a tourist tax made of two parts: a Catalan regional levy (the IEET) plus a Barcelona city surcharge, applied per adult per night and added to your accommodation bill, not the headline room rate. Since 1 April 2026 the city surcharge is EUR 5 per person per night for every accommodation type, which roughly doubled the total. In practice that means about EUR 7 to 12.50 per adult per night depending on category: a tourist apartment now carries EUR 9.50 (4.50 regional + 5.00 city) and a five-star hotel EUR 12. The tax is charged for a maximum of seven consecutive nights, and the city surcharge is legislated to keep rising by a euro a year until it reaches EUR 8 in 2029.

Rule of thumb

Two adults in a mid-range hotel should budget roughly EUR 15 to 20 per night on top of the room, charged at checkout. Children under 17 are generally exempt under the IEET rules; confirm how your accommodation applies it when you book. On a week-long stay the meter stops after night seven.

What is actually worth paying for

Most Barcelona spending mistakes are not overpaying, they are paying for the wrong layer. The things that consistently justify their price: a timed skip-the-line ticket for the Sagrada Família (the difference between a 9:00 entry and an hour in the wrong queue), one guided day if you want the Gaudí story told properly, where a full-day Gaudí tour replaces three separate ticket-admin problems with one booking, and a day trip done the right way round: for Montserrat the tour-or-train question is genuinely close, so run the numbers before defaulting to either. The things that rarely justify their price: attraction passes bought on autopilot, taxis for journeys the metro does in the same time, and paid viewpoints on days the free ones deliver the same skyline.

Where to save without ruining the trip

The biggest levers are when and where you stay. Travelling in November or February instead of July can roughly halve the hotel line; see best time to visit. Eat your main meal at lunch on the weekday menu del dia and tapas in the evening. Walk the clustered days in our three-day itinerary rather than hopping the metro. Buy a 10-trip transit ticket rather than singles. And only buy a city attraction pass if you will genuinely use enough of it; we run the honest maths in getting around.
