Magic Fountain of Montjuic: show times and tips
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic (Font Magica) is one of Barcelona's best free experiences: a synchronised light, water and music show at the foot of the hill below the MNAC museum. No booking, no ticket, no queue — you just show up. The fountain runs on a seasonal schedule and was closed for over a year during the 2022-2025 drought restrictions; it reopened in September 2025. Before you visit, check barcelona.cat for the current week's dates, since the schedule can shift for events or maintenance.
Our pick
The fountain is worth forty-five minutes of any Barcelona evening — and it is free. The best plan: eat pintxos on Carrer Blai in Poble Sec (a ten-minute walk from Placa d'Espanya), walk up for the 21:00 show, then climb the MNAC steps for the view of the lit-up fountain from above. Combine with a wider Montjuic visit in the daytime if you want to make the most of the hill. Do not make a dedicated trip from far across the city purely for the fountain — the show itself runs around twenty minutes — but as an add-on to an evening in Poble Sec or Placa d'Espanya, it is genuinely memorable.
Show schedule 2025-26
The Magic Fountain runs on a seasonal schedule set by the Barcelona City Council. The general pattern (verify at barcelona.cat before your visit, as dates change):
- Summer (June-September): Wednesday to Sunday, shows approximately every 30 minutes from 21:30 to 22:30. The later show in summer is often the most dramatic as full darkness falls.
- Spring and autumn (April-May and October): Thursday to Saturday, shows from approximately 20:00 to 21:00.
- Winter (November-March): Thursday to Saturday, shows from 19:00 to 20:00. Some weeks are restricted or paused for maintenance or scheduled events on Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina.
Important: the fountain was closed from late 2022 until September 2025 due to drought restrictions. It has now reopened but the city reserves the right to suspend shows again if water restrictions are imposed. Always check barcelona.cat or the Ajuntament de Barcelona social channels within forty-eight hours of your planned visit.
Special occasions: the fountain runs extended shows during La Merce festival (late September), New Year's Eve and several public holiday weekends. These draws larger crowds — arrive at least thirty minutes early for a good position.

Arrive at Font Magica
The fountain is at the top of the wide pedestrian avenue (Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina) that runs from Placa d'Espanya up towards MNAC. From the metro exit at Espanya, you cannot miss it — the avenue is straight ahead and the fountain is visible from the bottom of the hill on show evenings.
By bus: Bus 55 from Passeig de Gracia stops at Placa d'Espanya. Night buses (Nitbus N9, N12 and N13) serve the area for late returns.
Driving: not recommended on show evenings. Placa d'Espanya is busy and parking is limited. Take the metro.
From Barceloneta or the old town: Metro L3 from Drassanes or Liceu to Espanya is the fastest route (under fifteen minutes).
Best viewing spots
Ground level, front-centre: the plaza immediately in front of the fountain gives the most direct view of the water choreography. Arrive twenty minutes early for a good position on busy evenings. This is where most visitors stand.
MNAC steps (Palau Nacional steps): the grand staircase leading up to the MNAC museum sits directly behind and above the fountain. From the upper steps you look down over the fountain with the lit Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina behind it — an entirely different perspective, and significantly less crowded. The walk up the steps takes about five minutes from the fountain plaza. This is our preferred spot for photos and for avoiding the densest crowd.
Pavillons Mies van der Rohe terrace: the reconstructed 1929 German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe is directly beside the avenue. Its terrace gives a side-on elevated view. Worth combining if you visit the pavilion (separate admission) before the fountain show.
Worst spots: the sides of the avenue near the traffic lanes have partially obstructed views and get packed with tour group overflow. If you arrive late, the MNAC steps are a better fallback than the avenue sides.
Combine with dinner in Poble Sec
The best pre-fountain dinner option is Poble Sec, specifically Carrer Blai — a ten-minute walk from Placa d'Espanya and the heart of Barcelona's pintxos bar culture. The pintxos bars on Carrer Blai are typically open from 19:00 and the format (small toasted bread topped with various things; you pay by the piece, usually EUR 1.50-2.50 each) means you can eat well, affordably and quickly without a reservation. See our Carrer Blai pintxos guide for the specific bars worth using.
The timing works well: eat on Carrer Blai from 19:30-20:30, walk fifteen minutes up to Placa d'Espanya and the avenue, arrive in time for the 21:00 or 21:30 show. On summer evenings, this is one of the most pleasant free evenings in the city.

Common questions
Is the Magic Fountain of Montjuic free?
Yes. The fountain show is entirely free — no ticket, no booking, no queue to enter. You walk up to Placa de Carles Buigas, find a spot, and watch. The only cost is your metro fare to Espanya.
Was the fountain closed? Is it open now?
The fountain was closed from late 2022 until September 2025 due to Barcelona's drought restrictions, which prohibited large-scale decorative water use. It reopened in autumn 2025 and is running its normal schedule as of June 2026. The city could impose restrictions again in a future drought, so check barcelona.cat before visiting.
What are the Magic Fountain show times in summer 2026?
In summer (June-September), the general pattern is Wednesday to Sunday from approximately 21:30, with shows roughly every 30 minutes until 22:30. The schedule is set by the Ajuntament de Barcelona and can shift — always confirm at barcelona.cat in the week of your visit.
How long does the Magic Fountain show last?
Each individual show sequence runs approximately twenty minutes. On evenings with multiple shows, you can watch more than one if you arrive early. Most visitors arrive for one show, which is sufficient to experience the full effect.
What is the best time to visit the Magic Fountain?
Summer evenings (June-August) give you the most shows per week and the warmth to stand outside comfortably. The 21:30 or 22:00 show in summer is the most dramatic as it runs in full darkness. Spring and autumn shows start earlier (around 20:00) and the smaller crowds are a genuine advantage.
Can I combine the Magic Fountain with MNAC (the art museum)?
MNAC closes at 20:00 on most days (21:30 on Saturdays), so same-evening combination is possible only in the extended Saturday hours. A better plan: visit MNAC in the afternoon (it is excellent — Romanesque art, Modernisme collection), then return for the evening fountain show. The MNAC steps are one of the best viewing positions for the show regardless.
