Barcelona airport to the city centre
Barcelona El Prat (BCN) sits about 15 km from the centre, with four sensible ways in. The right one comes down to your terminal, your luggage and how many of you there are. Here is each option on time, price and hassle, and the call we would make.
Our pick
Solo or a couple, travelling light: the Aerobus (frequent, every terminal, drops at Placa Catalunya) or the RENFE R2 train if you land at T2 and stay near Sants or Passeig de Gracia. A family or group with luggage, or a late arrival: a taxi or a fixed-price transfer is worth the extra. The metro L9 Sud is cheap but slow with bags and rarely the best choice.
Every option compared
| Option | Time | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aerobus | 30 to 35 min | ~EUR 7.25 | Most people; runs from T1 and T2 to Placa Catalunya, very frequent. |
| RENFE R2 train | ~25 min to Sants | ~EUR 4.60 | Cheapest; only at T2 (free shuttle from T1). Good for Sants / Passeig de Gracia. |
| Metro L9 Sud | ~30 to 45 min + change | ~EUR 5.70 | Budget travelers staying near the L9 line; awkward with luggage. |
| Taxi | 20 to 30 min | ~EUR 35 to 40 | Groups, luggage, late nights; metered, airport supplement applies. |
| Private transfer | 20 to 30 min | fixed, from ~EUR 40 | Meet-and-greet, fixed price, families and group splits. |
Prices are indicative for 2026 and change; the airport train is covered by integrated transit tickets and the Hola Barcelona card, the Aerobus is not.
Pre-booked airport transfer
A fixed price agreed before you fly, a driver at arrivals, and no taxi-queue lottery. For two people travelling light it is overkill; for a family of four it often costs little more than a taxi while removing the stress.
Optional and not the cheapest; the train and Aerobus win on price. A transfer suits groups, luggage and late arrivals.
By terminal
Terminal 1 (T1) is used by most full-service and long-haul airlines. The Aerobus A1 runs straight from T1; the R2 train does not stop here, so take the free inter-terminal shuttle to T2 if you want the train. Terminal 2 (T2) is mainly low-cost carriers; the R2 train station is a short covered walk from T2B, and the Aerobus A2 also serves it. Whichever you land at, the metro L9 Sud has stations at both terminals but needs a line change to reach the centre.
Good to know
- Free shuttle
- A bus links T1 and T2 around the clock; allow 10 to 15 min.
- Night arrivals
- The Nitbus N17/N16 and taxis cover the hours the train and Aerobus thin out.
- Tickets
- The R2 train is included in T-casual and Hola Barcelona; the Aerobus needs its own ticket.
- Watch your bags
- Stations and the Aerobus stop are pickpocket spots; keep bags zipped and close.
