Free things to do in Barcelona
Some of the best of Barcelona costs nothing: a sunset over the whole city, miles of beach, a medieval quarter made for getting lost, and museums that open their doors free on the right day. Here is what is genuinely worth your time without spending a euro, and how to time the free museum days.
The one free thing to do
Walk up to the Bunkers del Carmel for sunset. It is a Civil War anti-aircraft battery on a hilltop with a 360-degree view over the entire city and out to sea, and it is completely free. Bring something to drink, take your rubbish home, and go before the light fades. The best view in Barcelona costs nothing.
Always free
- Bunkers del Carmel: the city's best panorama, especially at sunset.
- The beaches: Barceloneta to Bogatell, free sand and sea all summer.
- The Gothic Quarter and El Born: the cathedral exterior, Roman walls and medieval lanes; wandering is the point.
- Park Guell's free zone: the wooded park around the paid Monumental Zone is free to walk.
- Montjuic gardens: hillside parks, the cactus garden and viewpoints over the port.
- The Magic Fountain: the free light-and-water show below Montjuic, when it is running (check the schedule, which has been reduced).
- Sagrada Familia from outside: the Nativity facade is free to admire from the street.
- Markets: La Boqueria and Santa Caterina cost nothing to wander (eating is extra).
Free at the right time
When museums are free
- First Sunday of the month
- Many city museums (MNAC, Picasso, MUHBA and more) are free all day.
- Sunday afternoons
- Several museums open free from around 15:00; check each one.
- Public holidays
- Some sites add free days; La Merce (Sep) opens many for free.
- Always check
- Free slots can need a timed booking; reserve ahead in summer.
Time your museum visits to these windows and you can see a lot for nothing. They get busy, so book the free slot online where offered and arrive early.
See the city for free, on foot
A walking tour of the Gothic Quarter is a cheap way to add context to the free wandering. For the paid headline sights, our things to do guide says which are worth the ticket.
Many walking tours are tip-based or low cost; we may earn a commission on booked tours.
How we checked this
Free attractions and the museum free-day pattern reflect current city practice; exact free-entry times and the Magic Fountain schedule change seasonally, so confirm before you go. We re-check each season.
