Montjuic: the hill above Barcelona

Montjuic is the green hill on the city's southwest side, packed with the most things-to-do per square metre in Barcelona: a castle, world-class museums, Olympic venues, gardens and the Magic Fountain, all with views over the port. It is the easy day-three highlight. Here is how to string the best of it into a half day.

Our half-day plan

Go up by cable car or the funicular, start at the castle for the harbour panorama, walk down through the gardens to the Joan Miro Foundation or the MNAC (pick one museum unless you love art), and time the end of the day for the Magic Fountain show below MNAC, if it is running. That is a satisfying half day without rushing.

What to see

Montjuic highlights

Montjuic Castle
A hilltop fortress with the best ramparts view over the port; low entry, great value.
MNAC
The National Art Museum of Catalonia in the grand Palau Nacional; superb Romanesque collection.
Joan Miro Foundation
A light-filled museum of the Catalan surrealist; a local favourite.
Magic Fountain
The free evening light-and-water show below MNAC; check the reduced schedule before counting on it.
Poble Espanyol
An open-air "Spanish village" of replica architecture; touristy but fun with kids.
Gardens & Olympic ring
Botanical gardens, the 1992 Olympic stadium and the Calatrava tower.

Getting up (and around)

The scenic way is the Montjuic cable car from the Paral-lel funicular up to the castle area; the Telefric del Port cable car also crosses from Barceloneta with harbour views. Cheaper options are the city bus (150) and the funicular on a normal metro ticket. Once up, it is walkable downhill, but the hill is large, so pick a couple of sights rather than trying to do everything. For where this lands on the view rankings, see best viewpoints.

Go up the scenic way

Montjuic cable car & museum tickets

The cable car and the big museums sell timed tickets worth buying ahead in summer. The castle and gardens are inexpensive or free to walk, and the Magic Fountain show costs nothing when it runs.

How we checked this
