Montserrat, the couple day trip
When you want a day out of the city that is more awe than party, Montserrat delivers it: a serrated mountain an hour from Barcelona, a monastery wedged into the rock, ridge walks with the whole of Catalonia laid out below. It is the most romantic half-day within easy reach.
Our pick
DIY is very doable and cheaper: take the FGC R5 and ride up by cable car or rack railway. Take a tour only if you want zero logistics or a winery tasting bundled in, which makes for a lovely slow couple's day. For just the mountain and the monastery, the train and a combined ticket win.
Getting there
Trains leave from Plaça Espanya on the FGC R5 line. You ride about an hour to the foot of the mountain, then go up the final stretch one of two ways: the Aeri de Montserrat cable car for the dramatic swing over the valley, or the Cremallera rack railway for a gentler, steadier climb. Combined train-and-ascent tickets keep it simple and cheap.

On the mountain
The heart of it is the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery and its basilica, home to the Black Madonna and, if you time it, the renowned Escolania boys' choir. Above the monastery a funicular and a web of marked trails open out the ridge; the walk to Sant Joan or out to Sant Jeroni, the high point, is the part couples remember. Bring layers, the summit sits well above the city heat, and pack water for the trails.
How you shape the day is the real decision. A tight half-day is the monastery, the viewpoint funicular and a short ridge stroll, back in the city by mid-afternoon. A full day adds the longer Sant Jeroni walk and a slow lunch, and this is where Montserrat turns romantic: there are quiet stone benches with the whole valley below and almost no one around. The monastery cafeteria is functional rather than special, so for the slow version pack a picnic or aim for a late lunch back near the train. Mornings are clearer and cooler; aim to be on the early train up and let the afternoon light do the rest on the way down.
Good to know
Spain ranks joint-second worldwide on the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index, and Montserrat is a calm, everyday day out where two men or two women sharing the view raise no eyebrows. It is a working monastery, so dress is relaxed but not beach-bare inside the basilica. Wear proper shoes for the trails and check the last cable car down so the evening is unhurried.
