Where to eat in Barcelona, by neighbourhood
Where you eat in Barcelona matters as much as what you order. Each barri has its own food personality, and matching the meal to the area is the easiest way to eat well. Here is what each neighbourhood does best, and the simple rule that keeps you out of the tourist traps.
The one rule
Wherever you are, walk one street back from the main square or boulevard. The food on the prime tourist frontage is the worst and priciest in every barri; the good stuff is a block away where locals actually eat. With that rule, here is where each neighbourhood shines.
Barri by barri
El Born and the Gothic Quarter. The densest run of good old-town bars: tapas, natural wine and modern Catalan kitchens, especially in El Born. Avoid the cathedral and Placa Reial terraces; go a street back. See the El Born guide.
Gracia. Village-feel and great value: vermouth bars, brunch, vegetarian kitchens and square terraces where locals linger. The Gracia guide has the squares to aim for.
Sant Antoni and Poble Sec. The market hall plus a brilliant, well-priced food scene, and the Carrer Blai pintxos run in Poble Sec next door. See the Sant Antoni guide and our pintxos guide.
Barceloneta. Seafood and rice by the sea, but only away from the beachfront touts; the real rice houses are in the grid. See best paella and rice.
Eixample. Smart restaurants and a strong vermouth scene; the Esquerra (left) half is better value than the Passeig de Gracia frontage. See the Eixample guide.

Common questions
Which neighbourhood is best for food in Barcelona?
Sant Antoni, Gracia and El Born are the standouts for everyday eating and value. Barceloneta is best for seafood and rice (away from the beachfront), and Eixample for smarter restaurants.
Where do locals eat in Barcelona?
In the residential barris: Sant Antoni, Gracia and Poble Sec, and a street back from the main tourist squares everywhere else. The prime frontage on La Rambla and the cathedral is the worst value.
Where should I avoid eating in Barcelona?
The photo-menu terraces on La Rambla, around Placa Reial and the cathedral, and the Barceloneta beachfront. Walk one block back in any neighbourhood for far better food.
Do I need to book restaurants in Barcelona?
For dinner at popular modern spots, yes. Classic tapas bars and many rice houses take no reservations, so go early instead.
